Q.What is an inductive loop vehicle detector and how does it work? A. The complete detector consists of a loop of wire and an electronic detection unit. The operation is based on the principle of metal detection. As an example, a metal detector has a movable “coil” (or loop) which is waved above a buried metal object, which disrupts the electrical field generated by the loop and causes the metal detector to respond with an output, usually an audible tone. With a vehicle detector, the loop is buried in the roadway and the object to be detected is a vehicle. When the loop detects the vehicle, the detector provides a relay switch closure output. Q. What is a loop coil? A. The loop consists of one or more turns of wire located in or under the pavement and wound in a square, rectangle or circular form. 1. The detector should be installed in a waterproof housing as close to the loop as possible. 2. The loop and feeder should be made from insulated copper wire with a minimum cross-sectional area of 1.5mm2. The feeder should be twisted with at least 20 turns per meter. Joints in the wire are not recommended and must be soldered and made waterproof. Faulty joints could lead to incorrect operation of the detector. Feeders which may pick up electrical noise should use screened cable, with the screen earthed at the detector. 3. The loop should be either square or rectangular in shape with a minimum distance of 1 meter between opposite sides. Normally 3 turns of wire are used in the loop. Large loops with a circumference of greater than 10 meters should use 2 turns while small loops with a circumference of less than 6 meters should use 4 turns.When two loops are used in close proximity to each other it is recommended that 3 turns are used in one and 4 turns in the other to prevent cross-t

How a Loop Detector Works? The loop is placed under the road surface, usually in a rectangular shape, at a depth of around 50mm. This keeps it out of view and reduces the likelihood of anything going wrong. It is then connected to a loop extension cable, often using an M12 connector, which joins up with the actual loop detector. A magnetic field runs from the loop to the detector and if no traffic is present this remains at the same frequency. The detector monitors the frequency and if a vehicle passes over it will change the frequency. This causes the relay to close and triggers the reaction — for example, it opens a gate or changes the traffic lights. Once the vehicle has gone past, the relay will open again, closing the gate or changing the lights back again. The loops can be purchased pre-assembled, allowing them to be easily fitted into the required position. They come in a number of different sizes, making them suitable for a range of applications.
